BURY HILL FISHERIES REPORTS

NEW LARGER TACKLE SHOP NOW OPEN
Open 7 days a week, 363 days a year when you need it!
Check out Bury Hill’s tackle and bait shop at: http://www.buryhillfisheries.co.uk/fishing-tackle.phtml

WATER TEMPERATURES
Another pretty good week weather wise although a couple of frosts did put water temperatures under pressure although generally there was no change in the week with water temperatures sitting around 12 degree’s whilst oxygen levels were 36%. Outlook for the week ahead is much colder, although plenty of sunshine.

THIS WEEKS FISHING!
Another good overall with both pike and zander showing in reasonable numbers with zander to 12lb reported and pike to 16lb. On the carp front Temple throws up a brace of autumn thirties whilst anglers are still catching multi bags on the Old Lake. On the general front, the Old Lake continues to see bags of bream still being caught as well as the odd late season tench whilst Bonds and Milton Lakes both continue to fish pretty well with Bonds Lake fishing still producing bags of carp to 50lb whilst Milton Lake has been producing prime nets of quality roach and perch with weights to 40lb reported.

OLD BURY HILL LAKE – PREDATOR FISHING
A pretty good week for predator catches with zander again tending to dominate sport as warmer coloured water conditions persist. As such a number of doubles were reported again this week topped by a 12lb specimen along with a number of multi bags. With pike preferring colder clearer water conditions, the first frosts of the winter have seen a few more pike on the bank although over the coming weeks as temperatures tend to drop expect more pike to be caught.

Whilst both float and ledgered baits are working, a lot of the fish are coming to ledgered dead baits with small roach and trout both fishing well although smaller sea baits such as smelt and mackerel tails are also catching.

THIS WEEKS CATCH’S
Tony Cribbs had a great days sport when he fished the front bank for the zander. Tackling peg 24, Tony ledgered small freshwater and sea baits to catch 7 fish to 12lb 1oz, his best ever zander and a new PB. Mark Taylor also did well catching 5 zander and 2 pike from the jungle. Fishing float-fished dead baits, Mark caught on sections, which he fished on a single size 6 to the margins. Marks best zander weighed 9lb 12oz whilst both his pike were around the 15lb mark. This week also saw Ian Welch visit doing a zander feature for the Anglers Mail. Whilst I cannot tell you how Ian did, I can say that Bury Hill did not disappoint. I understand that the article will be printed in the next 3 weeks or so.

OLD BURY HILL LAKE – GENERAL & BOAT FISHING
With the odd frost, the general fishing has become a little harder this week with mainly bream making up the catches, although the odd tench is still showing from the jungle to boat anglers. As is pretty usual at this time of year, the front and long banks are the most productive areas with both float, pole and feeder tactics catching bags to 50lb. Bait wise maggot, caster, worm, corn, soft pellet, meat and mini boilies are all working. Carp-wise, a few multi bags were reported this week, which included fish to mid twenties. Boat anglers also reported some reasonable catches from the jungle with the best of the sport being found around the margins Matt Barnett led the field this week catching a stunning 26lb 2oz common, which fell to double red maggot fished on a pole making his catch all the more remarkable. Matt fished peg 54 and took 40 minutes to land his prize.

OLD BURY HILL & TEMPLE LAKE - CARP
A bit of a mixed week for the carpers with some reasonable catches reported, although as temperatures dip the fishing will go through a transition period. Saying that, sport did respond mid week with quite a few multi bags reported from the Old Lake topped by a couple of good upper twenties. With the front and long banks producing, the shallow water swims are surprisingly fishing well. Bait wise, much the same as previous weeks with Icelandic Red, Fusion, KG1 and Cell all catching with pva and pellet bags working well on the feed front. On Temple, the past week has been a touch harder following the run of thirties over recent weeks. Although reports for this weekend are sketchy, a few mid twenties have been reported along with a couple of upper twenties in the week. With most good baits working, popped up corn is still working well as well as most good quality boilies.

Sean Howard was again the man to beat on Temple this week bagging both a brace of thirties this weekend along with a 28lb 4oz common and 24lb 5oz mirror, which he caught during an earlier session. Fishing peg 5, Sean fished his tried and trusted popped up red corn over free offerings with his first fish a 33lb 4oz coming from just short of the island whilst his second thirty of the session, a 32lb 10oz mirror come from the channel between the islands. Sean’s 28lb 4oz common and 24lb 5oz mirror from earlier in the week fell to popped up corn fished to the margins from pegs 2 and 6. This now brings the total number of thirties caught by Sean to 16 and his total number of Temple fish this year to 48.

Sean Howard with his 28lb 4oz Temple common, pictures of his brace of thirties to follow next week.
The Old Lake has also fished pretty well this week producing a number of multi bags, which have included quite a few twenties. Matt Barnett led the field this week catching a stunning 26lb 2oz common, which fell to double red maggot fished on a pole making his catch all the more remarkable. Matt fished peg 54 and took 40 minutes to land his prize. Another angler to do well was Ben Laverton who caught five fish topped by a 21lb common. Fishing the long bank, Ben fished a KG1 boilie to the island.

PLEASE NOTE!

Temple Lake can only be fished by Specimen Carp Members, with membership numbers strictly limited to anglers with some experience of catching bigger fish. Membership includes Old Bury Hill Lake and Temple Lake our new specimen carp lake. Following recent stockings, Temple currently holds just under a 100 fish to upper thirties, which includes 22 known thirties, the average size is over 27lb. To date there has been a waiting list to join, however there is a small number of places available for 2008 which will be available on a first come first served basis, anyone interested should contact David or Jane on 01306 877540, or download an application form from our website.

BONDS LAKE
Despite a couple of hard frosts, Bonds has continued to fish well again this week with bags to 50lb reported. Whilst most methods and baits are working, float and feeder tactics are taking most of the catches with pellet, soft paste, corn, meat and maggot are all working 14 year old Alex Nash had a good day on Bonds catching a brace of doubles weighing 13lb and 11lb. Alex feeder fished corn, see picture. Alex’s friend Ben Taylor also had a good session catching fish to 11lb, see picture.

MILTON LAKE
Milton takes on a new direction as we head into winter with good numbers of roach, rudd and perch starting to show from all areas, although the odd tench and crucian is still on the cards. With good numbers of roach and perch starting to show in bags to 50lb, the best baits appear to be caster, maggot, pellet and worm. Chris Williams had a good session catching 30lb of roach and perch from peg 3. Fishing caster and maggot, Chris fished a short pole catching on double baits loose feeding little and often.
LLYN Y GORS REPORTS

Liam Dean certainly got this week's best capture with a fantastic 28lb 14oz Mirror Carp from the 'Nightmare' swim. Fishing tight to the lillypads to the left of the swim using Nash Scopex Squid and Robin Red 15mm frozen boilies, the big bellied Mirror was on the feed like the rest of the fish in the specimen lake and provided an exceptional capture. The majority of anglers are now catching well on both Thompson's Pool and The Old Carp Lake. Cliff and Wayne Riley have had eleven fish between them in the past week on The Old Carp Lake with the biggest up to 13lb. Likewise Phil Cartner and Mark Drennan have been catching well from 'The Door' swim at various points with biggest fish up to 12lb 14oz. The best baits at the moment seem to be any fishmeal and fruit flavours with SmartBait CSL Core 15mm frozen boilies a particular favourite at the moment on The Old Carp Lake.

Continuing a superb performance on the 'Nightmare' swim of Thompson's Pool, Liam Dean reeled in another fantastic Mirror Carp this time weighing in at a cracking 24lb 15oz. The gorgeous coloured Mirror was picked up from the margins of the swim using an inline running rig and the tactics were definitely spot on for the fishing. Liam continued to bait up his swim with crushed boilies and pellets whilst resting his swim for certain periods during the day. This allowed the fish to move into the area feeding comfortably without any disturbance of lines and this proved great tactics by the youngster as demonstrated by his fantastic brace.

Jordan Dean continued some good form on the specimen lake Thompson's Pool with the youngster capturing a lovely long 20lb Common Carp from Double Bay Right. Baiting his swim up with pva bags crammed full of pellet and Nash Scopex Squid and Robin Red 15mm frozen boilies, the young angler was absolutely thrilled with his captures. The fish are definitely on the feed on Thompson's Pool and everybody is also catching particularly well on The Old Carp Lake as well.
CUDMORE FISHERIES REPORTS

MILO
NOW THAT THE WEATHER IS GETTING COLDER ITS TIME TO GET OUT THE FEEDER ROD AND USE A MAGGOT FEEDER, REMEMBER TO CLIP UP SO THAT YOU CAN CAST IN THE SAME SPOT EVERY TIME AS ACCURATE CASTING IS VITAL DURING THE COLDER MONTHS, USE A SMALLISH MAGGOT FEEDER AND FILL IT WITH MAGGOTS EVERY CHUCK, NEVER JUST LEAVE IT STILL FOR MORE THAN A FEW MINUTES AND JUST TWITCH IT EVERY NOW AND THEN, IF YOU DON'T GET A BITE IN 5 OR 6 MINUTES REEL IN AND REPEAT REMEMBERING TO TWITCH THAT BAIT. YOU WILL NEED AT LEAST 2PTS OF MAGGOTS, EXPECTED TO CATCH ANYTHING FROM TINY ROACH TO BIG CARP AND BARBEL SO DON'T FISH TO LIGHT YOU WILL PROBABLY NEED 6LB MAIN LINE AND A 4LB BOTTOM, YOU WILL NEED A 16S HOOK TIED TO A 2FT TRACE.

AVOCA, DRUMBLE & TARA

FISHING VERY WELL AT THE MOMENT BUT AS IT GETS COLDER YOU MAY HAVE TO SCALE DOWN A BIT AND USE SMALLER BAITS, TRY A SMALL METHOD FEEDER, THE KORAM AND COBRA ONES ARE SPOT ON WITH A COUPLE OF DEAD MAGGOTS TUCKED IN SIDE, REMEMBER TO GET YOUR GROUND BAIT MIX WRIGHT AND DON'T MIX IT TO WET, IF MIXED PROPERLY IT SHOULD BE DAMP AND POWDERY, PUSH IT THROUGH A RIDDLE FOR BEST RESULTS. YOU WILL PROBABLY CATCH MAINLY CARP ON THIS METHOD. AVOCA AND DRUMBLE WILL BOTH RESPOND WELL TO THIS METHOD.

ARENA & THE NEW POOLS
BY FAR THE BEST METHOD ON ARENA IS THE BOMB AND HAIR RIGGED CORN, CAST AROUND TILL YOU GET A RESPONSE THEN SIT ON THAT AREA, LOOSE FEED 3 OR 4 PIECES OF CORN EVERY 5 MINUTES UNTIL YOU GET A BITE THEN LEAVE TILL BITES SLOW DOWN, JUST GET INTO A RHYTHM AND KEEP THE BITES COMING. THIS METHOD IS ALSO DEADLY ON THE NEW POOLS.

SUEZ AND BREWSTERS
PICK 3 AREAS TO FISH IN YOUR SWIM AND KEEP YOUR FEED TIGHT, ACCURATE PLUMBING IS ESSENTIAL, FEED LITTLE AND OFTEN REMEMBERING TO FEED THE AREAS THAT YOU ARE RESTING, BEST BAITS ARE PELLET AND CORN, BUT ALWAYS HAVE A FEW MAGGOTS JUST INCASE

CUDMORE'S HOT PEGS
LOOK FOR THE HOT PEGS ON THE WINTER HOT PEGS PAGE, AFTER YEARS OF EXPERIENCES, THE INDICATED AREAS ON THE MAP SHOWS THE BEST SWIMS TO FISH DURING THE COLD MONTHS, & SHOULD INCREASE YOUR CHANCE OF A GOOD DAYS FISHING EVEN ON THE COLDEST DAYS.

MALLORY PARK FISHERIES REPORTS

A dull blustery day for this week's winter league match, the wind was from the south west and the conditions looked good for a few fish. Mr Ward handled the draw magnificently considering his sidekick Rob the Eel wasn't at his side. There were very few insults this week as he was concentrating hard taking the pools and counting up the anglers. 48 anglers turned out to fish this week but there were a few regulars missing, most notably Robber Roy and Mr Ward commented that he would probably catch lots of fish this week as Roy had not prepared his bait for him!

Rob the Eel had actually sent his apologies for not helping out his week as he had to take his better half to the airport. Andy Kind was one of the last at the draw, he had been to the Quorn car boot sale, looking for some bargains. He couldn't wait to tell everyone that Rob the Eel had actually drawn the end peg at the boot sale and was giving people money to take his kit off him. Andy commented that he was struggling to even give his kit away. We hope this was the case as we would not like to lose our most improved angler
TINGRITH FISHERIES REPORTS

Orchid
Is producing amazingly well! This weekend has seen one Leigh catch just over 300lb of carp over two nights using proactive boilies and trout pellet in PVA bags. Largest fish 18lb 4oz mirror average stamp around 12lb. To add to that his fellow angler, Simon, caught a further 100lb plus using similar methods. And that was just two people!

Cherry
Is producing lovely carp upto 20lb alot around the 5-10lb mark.

Fringe
Is still producing loads of crucians and brown goldfish even though the water is very low. Toby caught yet another 11lb carp from here - this lad will go far!

Gary Mcguire, a 39 year old electrician from Luton, caught the 46lb Wels Cat fish on his first visit to Tingrith Orchid Lake. He was fishing for carp on a Zebco Cool carp rod and Zebco Cool RC355 reel using 15lb main line, size 8 barbless hook and 15 red maggots on a maggot ring using aTFG pop-up hair rig Not only was this the first time Gary has fished  Orchid Lake, it was his second ever time at Tingrith and his first ever cat fish. Having played the fish for about 25 minutes he was wondering what it was as the swirl seemed to be along way from the hook! Gary has fished most of his life, having had a break form it to play football, his is now well and truely hooked on fishing again in a big way. Andy Beaney caught this fantastic specimen of a common carp on Orchid Lake - 22lb 4oz. We're not sure why he's looking so angry though! Sean Mobbs of Letchworth caught this 26lb 2oz common carp from the beach swim on Orchid Lake on 5th Aug using dog biscuit and bubble float.
 WOODLAND LAKES

My favorite lake at the moment Adam.
Best method for me is groundbait feeder with bronze maggots sandwiched in feeder. Cast to middle of lake. 12" tail to size 12 or 14 hook with worm and bronze maggot or half inch cube of luncheon meat works as well. Get plenty of bait in cos once they start its a fish a chuck! Strong line 8lb straight through( I kept getting snapped on 6lb so changed to 8 last time I went).I use green Swimstim groundbait with a tin of Frenzied Hemp mixed in and some small Swimstim pellets. Keep hold of your rod cos mine went for a swim when I reached for my cup of coffee and an angry carp took my bait
CELTIC LAKES RESORT

Welsh Banks emptied to pay record breaking prize fund"
Mark Adams and Dean Amesbury from Tredegar have won the inaugural Wales Carp Masters at Celtic Lakes resort this weekend lifting the magnificent trophy and collecting the wallet busting £10,001 cash first prize.
The overall prize fund is the biggest in the UK amounting to £20,001. First prize was paid in £1 coins and the winning pair showered themselves in coins celebrating their victory. Three banks in Lampeter were cleaned out of coins to get sufficient for the first prize, heads turned as the huge quantities were carried to waiting car.
25 qualifying heats located at 5 different venues in Wales have taken place over the past 6 months from which the winning pairs qualified through to the grand final. The competitors battled it out in a 44 hour enduro which saw a total off 84 fish caught with a total weight of 681lbs.
Sky TV were on site and captured an unusual dance performed by the winners as the realisation that they had won was confirmed at the end of the competition.
In Second place were Paul Jones and Anthony Budd who had been leading the competition from the start until the last 6 hours. They scooped £4,000 of prizes.
The Father and son combination of Martin and Joe Newby came third and collected £3,000 in Prizes. Joe was the youngest competitor in the final at just 14 years old.
An additional prize was given for the first fish of the competition that was caught tipping the scales to an amazing 2 ounces!!! This was caught by Paul Morgan who said "it put up a great fight for its size".
Mark Adams said " winning the inaugural Wales Carp Masters with Dean is a dream come true. When we saw the prize table with all the £1 coins we could not believe our eyes. There was no way we could lift them up when we tried. We are looking forward to taking them to the bank and seeing the face of the cashier".
Event organisers Ross Honey and Peter Hands said "we created this event to help promote angling in Wales and we have had great support from Visit Wales, Regional Tourism Partnerships and The Environment Agency. When we saw the resort just over a year ago now and met the owner John Carney we were impressed with the plans he has. Investing over £4.5M in the resort, it will create a massive boost for the local economy as an attraction and a great bench mark for Wales. The event has been a massive success, we are looking forward to next year and developing this still further with the addition of an angling festival".
WHITE ACRES HOLIDAY PARK

Following a long and detailed investigation, White Acres Holiday Park today were informed by the centre for environment, fisheries & Aquaculture science (cefas) that a sample of carp taken from Pollawyn & Trelawney have tested positive for Koi herpes virus (KHV) the low level, ongoing fish mortality at White Acres has resulted in the loss of approximately 5% of the carp stocks across the fishery

No fish have been stocked into the fishing lakes from outside source for very nearly five years so the disease has either been introduced prior to the spring of 2004 by infected stock from an outside source or has been introduced by other means.

Cefas, who have carried out thorough and rigorous testing on the site have advised the White Acres Fishery management team that they will be able to introduce stocks of carp after the fish mortality has ceased the new stocks could be from the on-site fish or non-susceptible species from outside sources, which would augment the already plentiful fish stocks in place.

White Acres have not been instructed to close the fishery. Therefore all matches. Festivals and general pleasure angling will continue as planned.

The 'Dry Net' policy, instigated by the fishery, will remain throughout and be rigorously enforced. In line with Cefas biosecurity recommendations and to prevent any further spread of the virus, all anglers will be asked to disinfect their landing and keepnets before leaving the venue for other fisheries or for home. White Acres will provide facilities for that purpose.

White acres has worked closely with Cefas to ensure a satisfactory outcome. The welfare of the fish within and outside the site has been a priority.

White Acres general manage Kevin Lucock said “White Acres apologise to anglers because it obviously isn't pleasant to see fish in distress or finding dead fish in early-morning sessions but please be assured that everything that could be done was done and will continue to be done.”
