Fishery Details:

Makins FisherySince taking over Makins Fisheries in August 2008, new owner Alan McDiarmid and his team have been busy tidying up the venue, cutting back shrubs and bushes and improving the banksides. They have also engaged the service of one of the UK's leading fishery consultants who will advise them on general fishery management with the emphasis being placed on fish welfare and improving the facilities and sport for anglers.

A member of Premier Fisheries, Makins offers 18 lakes and pools with more than 600 swims to suit all types of coarse anglers from 'Big game' carp and barbel haulers to pole fanatics. The fishery has been progressively developed over the past 15 years and in 1998 was nominated as an ATA 'Centre of Excellence' - only the third fishery in the UK to receive such an award.

Despite its reputation as a match fishery, four lakes and more than 120 pegs are never competitionMakins Lake 4 fished and are always available for pleasure anglers. With bloodworm and joker being the only bait bans, the idea is to catch fish and enjoy yourselves. The only rules which need to be observed are that barbless hooks must be used, Dynamite Baits Swimstim green pellets are the only pellets to be fed and that keep nets, dogs and alcohol are not allowed. Night fishing is now available by special arrangement. Daytime fishing is simply a case of turning up, checking on the notice board which pools are available and start fishing. Bailiffs are on hand to offer advice and assistance. Bookings are now also being taken for club matches and Corporate Days and it is hoped that in Spring 2009 the venue will launch a series of Evening Open Matches. As opening times vary slightly according to the time of year anglers should check the notice board for any variations There is no charge for a second rod in winter

The Lakes

The fishery is divided into three distinct areas, each with its own car parking facilities. For details and photographs about each, please follow the links:

Phase One: The first of the Makin Fisheries to be developed, Phase One comprises the largest of the pleasure and match waters and includes a total of five lakes ranging from six and a half acres in size to about two acres. Pole fishing is allowed on all of these waters.

Phase Two: With the exception of Lagoon and Lizard Pools, the waters on Phase Two are much smaller than those on Phase One but offer a more intimate feel because they incorporate inlets, bays, islands and irregular shapes. Although smaller in size than Phase One waters, the fish can be equally impressive.

Phase Three: The latest addition to Makin Fishery is the purpose-built Phase Three match complex which is served by its own car park and offers a total of 130 competition swims. Although only recently opened, Phase Three has been extensively planted and landscaped and provides one of the country's best match venues.
